about

In April 2018, someone called Nutby sent a track (which was work in progress and I was blown away)... Nutby told me he works for someone who supplies sound equipment to parties and events … and he had the most crazy story to tell... he said one day somebody put something in his mouth in a Goa party (where Nutby went with the sound team) and it changed everything. He had a very deep experience. Nutby saw Shiva himself in Mount Kailash who asked him to make music. He told us how after a month post the intense experience in the Goa party he started getting visions of an old man with flowing beard in an apple orchard somewhere in the mountains. The old man would keep on calling Nutby

He shared this with his mother who thought he was going nuts and took him to the Vetal Dev Temple in Worli Koliwada in Bombay. For the uninitiated, Vetal Dev is one of the protector deities of this Fishing village in Bombay where faithfuls ask for help through an oracle. It seems Nutby was told to do an elaborate ritual on a full moon towards the end of monsoon that year. But the voices and the visions, Nutby told me got only more intense and he ran away to Goa where it all started (the first track of Nutby's album - THEY TALK TO ME MOMMY- is inspired by this). He started working as a waiter in a shack in Goa but those voices and that old man… they would just refuse to go away. ..After a couple of months, it was “season” time, a group of foreigners started frequenting the shack Nutby was working for. Soon, over the next few weeks, the group began to thin down and eventually it was only one girl who was left. She would regularly come in the evening and would get drunk, Nutby told me. She would insist only Nutby serves her. (the second track of Nutby's mini album - LOVE QUEST(ION)- is inspired by this chance meeting of Nutby and Booyakasha) Booyakasha. That's her name.

One day sometime in summer Nutby and Booyakasha took the train and the bus to the mountains. And Lo!! And behold the old man with the flowing beard was waiting for them, Nutby told me, in the bus station. “I knew you would come,” the old man told them. (R-E-S-P-E-C-T the third track of the album is inspired by moment of serendipity). The old man took them in and indeed his house was right in the middle of an apple orchard as Nutby saw in his visions. But soon serendipity turned into a nightmare and the old man turned out to be monster. Nutby and Booyakasha found themselves trapped in a vicious cycle of lies and betrayal that reduced them to Aliens – always fearful, always on the run between places - where the old man pulled the strings. He had complete control over them. It lasted for 3 years (ALIENS ARE US – the fourth and the last track of the album is inspired by those 3 excruciating painful years where they earned for freedom every single moment).

And one day while they were in Goa, they decided never to return to the Old Man in the mountains.

I still don't know who Nutby is. He calls from a different number each time and he is not on social media.

All proceeds from sales will go to the Lynti Khasi School of Umsawwar – a small remote village of farmers & shepherds located in Meghalaya, Northeast India- to help better its infrastructure and much more including funding the higher studies of the pass-outs of Lynti Khasi School. The Lynti Khasi School, with its bare basic facilities, is trying really hard not only to educate the children of Umsawwar but to also strike a balance between education & the centuries-old traditional livelihood of the community where the children help their parents in the daily chores of rearing and farming.
