about

SAANWARE is a psychedelic tribute by Sanathana to the Singing Buddha from Pakistan Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan whose voice is like a Divine Frequency - direct, driving, thunderous, stormy and gentle all at the same time . SAANWARE (means Beloved) is a song from the movie BANDIT QUEEN - the true story of Phoolan Devi; India’s most famous outlaw, who, after being scorned and abused by society took up arms in revenge leaving behind a trail of death and destruction and died an equally violent way....

The pain of separation, the expression of longing, and to keep on loving in the face of seemingly irreparable loss is one of the most enduring themes of India's culturescape. In India you will find it everywhere - in our ancient scripts, devotional hymns, classical music, folk stories, poems, prose, songs, theatre, films and even on social media these days as India's hyper, oh! yes abhi!! younger generation (50% of India's 1 Billion population is below the age of 25 just so you know) travel to big cities to study and subsequently earn bread leaving everyone/everything behind.
..
SAAWARE by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Sahab is one such song of separation, longing and loving despite all odds.

So is SAAWARE about a woman missing her beloved? (as it is made out to be) For me, this song has a voice of its own. The narrative can be just as personal as you want it to be. In the closing stanza of SAAWARE, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Sahab sings -
डूब चले मेरी आस के तारे, कैसे पहुँचूँ प्रीत के द्वारे /टूट गए सब संग सहारे, डोले नैया दूर किनारे (My stars of hope are sinking thinking how do I reach my beloved's doorstep?/Gone are my near and dear ones. My boat is wobbling and the shore is nowhere to be seen)

This intense ride of separation, longing and loving was what I was going through during all of 2017. There was a spate of deaths in the family where older folks died without seeing their children who were working in big cities (they arrived, cremated and left), my father was sick, I was 2200 kms away earning a living and making it back home to be with my father seemed almost impossible then. All I could do was hope and not stop loving.

Iam extremely happy with the what Sanathana has come up with and I hope you will like it too.

Namaste and much love to everyone 🙏❤️

All proceeds from sales will go to the Lynti Khasi School of Umsawwar – a small remote village of farmers & shepherds located in Meghalaya, Northeast India- to help better its infrastructure and much more including funding the higher studies of the pass-outs of Lynti Khasi School. The Lynti Khasi School, with its bare basic facilities, is trying really hard not only to educate the children of Umsawwar but to also strike a balance between education & the centuries-old traditional livelihood of the community where the children help their parents in the daily chores of rearing and farming.
