Funkadelic's MAGGOT BRAIN was the sound of the Woodstock dream of "peace and love" deferred. It emerged screaming during the summer of 1971 along with another masterpiece, the introspective reportage of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” (popularised in the 1990s by the 4 Non-Blondes) from the shadows cast by the Vietnam War, the racial uprisings in New Jersey and Detroit, a heroin epidemic, poverty, the Kent State killings of anti- Vietnam War protestors, and the death of Jimi Hendrix at the age of 27, broken and disillusioned by the commodification of the music scene. MAGGOT BRAIN was a fiery manifesto that cut through the flurry of noise, tension, violence, and confusion and delivered a radical message of love, power, and funk, which still rings loud and clear today.
