Nau Khelar Gaan (The Song of the Boat Race) is the first release from Kamakhya Records' UNTOLD STORIES OF INDIA Series
//
Nau Khelar Gaan (The Song of the Boat Race) is a story from the char chapori areas of Assam in Northeast India. It is the "no-one-want-to-go" zone of Assam where a unscrupulous nexus of moneylenders, thikadars (contractors) and politicians rules the roost.
//
The char chaporis are super fertile but shifting river beds of the Brahmaputra River. It is inhabited by Bengali-speaking Muslims whose ancestors were brought to Assam from East Bengal (now Bangladesh) under the "grow more" policy of the British Raj.
\\
Not too many know that the cost of the Anglo-Burmese wars in which Assam was annexed into India in 1826 by the British Raj stood at One Billion Pounds by today's estimate. The British East India Company wanted to recover costs and they wanted to do it fast. The "grow more campaign" was a part of the recovery plan of the British East India Company and it resulted in Muslim farmers from East Bengal being settled in the char chapori areas for jute cultivation.
//
These hard-working farmers who grow jute, rice, vegetables, etc in the most challenging conditions rarely find mention in the mainstream narrative of Assam despite their contribution towards feeding a huge section of the population of Assam.
\\
They love their Nau Khela (Boat Races) on the River Brahmaputra, their life-giver and destroyer who not only nourish and sustain their crops but also wreak havoc on them every monsoon ripping through their very existence.
\\
Every August 15, they celebrate India's Independence by racing with their boats on the swollen waters of the River Brahmaputra, the flag of India held high - a country that has forgotten them and their very existence.
\\
All proceeds from sales will go to :

(1) The Lynti Khasi School of Umsawwar – a small remote village of farmers & shepherds located in Meghalaya, Northeast India- to help better its infrastructure and much more including funding the higher studies of the pass-outs of Lynti Khasi School.
~~
(2) The Society for Health & Educational Development (SHED), a not-for-profit residential and day boarding school in Assam, Northeast India for differently abled children from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
